The Latest Myanmar Sanctions: What It All Means
Over the last few months, we have seen the U.S., U.K. and EU ramp up sanctions regulations toward Myanmar as a result of the political developments in the country that have unfolded since the military coup back in February. At first, the U.S. announced new sanctions against two state-owned businesses with connections to the armed forces, Myanmar Economic Holding Limited (MEHL) and Myanmar Economic Corporation (MEC), among other military-linked bodies. Then, the EU issued an expanded set of sanctions against Myanmar’s military leadership, targeting 10 officials who were involved in toppling Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government and a violent crackdown on protesters. The U.K. and the EU have also sanctioned MEHL and MEC.
As new sanctions continue to be unveiled, join us for a webinar discussion of the targeted sanctions, FIS obligations for due diligence, and guidelines on doing business with Myanmar in the current environment.
